Hotels In London's Earls Court

There are a lot of Hotels in London’s Earl Court area, along with hostels, bedsits and apartments. I will try to narrow down the options a bit to make your choices a bit easier.

Why Earls Court?

For many years it was a rite of passage for Aussie kids, once they had finished their schooling, to head for London.

Invariably a large number of them headed to headed to Earls Court. So many in fact that the area became known locally as Kangaroo Valley, or Kangaroo Court. The reason that so many headed there was that this was the first area of London to make cheap accommodation readily available. This came in the form of bedsits and bed and breakfasts. Essentially the people of this area saw the opportunity and converted the houses to make a little extra money.

Thankfully, these days, a wide variety of accommodation can be found throughout much of London. Which, while providing a lot more options for travelers, also can make it a lot more challenging to know which option to use. If you’re considering London for the first time, then you should also read the companion article to this one, which is Hotels in London’s West End.

What’s in Earls Court?

Earls Court is on the Kensington, Chelsea side of London. This gives you good access to places like The Natural History Museum, The Science Museum, and The Royal Albert and Victoria Museum.

This is also handy to get to Kensington gardens, Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace. Public transport in the area will also serve you well. These areas all work well is you have young children. The first time we came to London, our kids were aged 5 to 10. I can clearly remember tears when we had to leave the Science Museum. Luckily next door was the Natural History Museum which was our next stop. There were more tears when closing time came.

Letting the kids run loose in Hyde Park got rid of a fair bit of energy as well as kicking up all of the Autumn leaves.

The area is also well served with pubs, so if you’re the thirsty type you should survive quite well.

Public Transport

Public transport in London is brilliant. The underground will get you pretty much anywhere you want to go to. Earls Court tube station has the Piccadilly line and District line, and both of these are important for the tourist.

The Piccadilly line starts (or finishes) at Heathrow airport, which for many us is where we first land in England. It makes a huge difference, especially when traveling with kids and luggage, not to have to change trains. Similarly, up towards the other end of this line is Kings Cross Station, which is attached to St Pancras Station. This is where the trains will take you throughout England and into Europe. It always pays to consider how you are getting to and from London as well.

The district line is good because it gets you to Victoria Station. This is where most of the tour companies have their offices and start their journeys. This is handy to take in the regional sites and day trips. Click here to get a copy of the London Underground map.

If you’re in London for more than a couple of days then it pays to get an Oyster card. Not only is it more convenient than trying to get your money out at each stop. It also works out a bit cheaper. Click here to check out the Oyster card.

So now lets have a look at some of the hotels in the area. I have tried to find a selection to cover more than one price range.

If you have looked at my blog before you will know that I have 3 main criteria by which I select accommodation. First is the ability to have breakfast, or facilities to make my breakfast. Going out looking for breakfast each morning can easily rob a couple of hours out of your day. This doesn’t help if you are only in town for a short time.

Next is laundry. I like to travel light on my travels, which I find makes the journey a lot more pleasant. This means however that I have to do laundry every few days. I don’t mind that though as it gives me an opportunity to sit quietly and write in my journal.

The last criteria is normally parking. However, this is London and you don’t need a car. It is much easier to use public transport here. If you are going on after London, I would advise you to take the train towards your next destination, then pick up a car once you get there.

Okay, so here’s my pick of accommodation that I would be happy to stay at. Hopefully something in here works for you. In each case just click on the name of the accommodation and a link will take you to Booking.com so that you can have a closer look.

Cheers and happy travels.
