I like a challenge. So I’ve decided to hunt for cheap hotels in Lucerne, Switzerland. This truly is a beautiful part of the world, but you can quickly blow your budget staying here if you’re not careful. I have managed to find a few reasonably priced hotels that will let you enjoy this wonderful region.
Along with this, I will give you a few tips to make your stay much easier, and ensure that you get the most out of your holiday.
Why Lucerne?
There are many reasons to visit this region and to use Lucerne as a base. For me, I love history, scenery and architecture, and Lucerne has all of this. Some people come for the winter sports and others love hiking and bike riding in the summer. Lucerne makes a great base to explore all of these things.
Attractions
Chapel Bridge This is a really picturesque bridge that dates back to the 14th century. It believed to be one of Europes oldest covered bridges. Once inside the bridge you can enjoy the view outside, or take in the paintings within.
Lion Monument In 1792 the French Revolution occurred. Several members of the Swiss Guard were killed. This monument was carved out of the rock to honor their memory. I had previously seen photos of the monument, but they didn’t do justice to it at all. You really have to see it to try and understand just how moving this tribute is.
Musegg Wall This wall is part of the old defensive structure of the city. A walk along here gives outstanding views and guided tours are available.
Lake Lucerne I’m almost convinced that if you accidentally took a picture at this lake, you could still win a prize for fine art. There are no bad angles. It is just spectacular from every angle. There are several boat tours each day to help you appreciate the natural beauty.
These are just a few of the local attractions which have caught my eye in the past. The City is also a great jumping off point for day trips. we generally head to one of the local mountain ranges to get close to ice and snow. We don’t get much of that in Western Australia, so it very novel. I haven’t tried skiing yet, as I fear I have all of the coordination of a giraffe climbing a cargo net.
Transport
Lucerne itself is quite a compact city and lends itself well to walkers. There are efficient bus services running and I have used them a couple of times. Certainly driving within the town, or at least parking, is an issue.
Nevertheless, a car is important to get the most out of the day trips. I’m sure that there are tours, but f you have a family like me the prices tend to add up a bit. I find that I can get better value having a car. It also gives me more flexibility as far as timings go.
Cheap Hotels In Lucerne
So now we get to the reason that you came here in the first place. Cheap hotels. And I also mentioned some money saving tips. The first tip, I have already given you. That is to hire a car. You will save money over the long run.
There are only 2 things to watch out for here. You need to get a sticker for your windscreen to show that you have paid your tolls. If hyou get photographed going through a toll area without a sticker then I’m told the fines are quite steep. Parking near the city can also be a bit pricey. So I make sure that I only get a hotel which has parking.
In addition to this, food is quite expensive in Switzerland. At least food at restaurants is. I’m not sure how the supermarkets stack up as I haven’t used them that much. So, in order to spend less money eating out, I always look for hotels that supply breakfast or least give me the facilities to make my own.
This has the other benefit of saving time. You can easily waste a couple of hours each day hunting for food for breakfast. Much better to have it sorted from the start.
Finally, the last tip is laundry. This is not so much a money saving tip, more of a time saver. Time is valuable on holiday. There’s never enough of it. I prefer a hotel that has laundry facilities. I try to always travel light which means that I need to do laundry every few days. If I can do this later at night or early in the morning at the hotel, then it leaves more more time for holiday activities.
What Is Cheap?
As for cheap, well that’s quite subjective. We may have very different ideas of what constitutes cheap. In order to draw some sort of line in the sand I have chosen $100 AUD per person per night. That works out to about $74 US or £54 GBP. This is as of October 2021 and I will try to update this post at least yearly to keep it relevant.
So here’s my pick of 5 hotels that fit into that price range. All 5 have breakfast, parking and laundry facilities. Hopefully you can find one that suits you. Just click on the hotel name, which will open a new page at Booking.com to show you more details about that property.
Cheers and happy travels
