What’s So Hard About Finding Budget Hotels?
In this post I will show you how to find budget hotels near Disneyworld. It sounds easy right. Just pick a price, and if the hotel is in that price range you’re done. But not so fast. That may be the way to find a cheap hotel, and if that’s all that you’re after then go for it. But that cheap hotel may end up costing you a whole lot more money in the long run.
I’m certainly not saying that hotel owners are going to take your money. But there are a number of ways that picking the right hotel can save you a whole lot more overall. In the end that will affect your entire budget, and leave you with more money to spend on things you really want.
Hotel Or Hostel
In this post I am going to limit myself to hotels only. My family and I have stayed in lots of hostels and they can be great fun. However I am aiming this information at family groups, and to be honest not all families are happy to share a room with other people they don’t know. Especially around their kids. That said though, if you ever get the courage up, give them a go. You will get to know your fellow traveler much better and learn to share information easier.
The people in hostels are generally on a bit of a budget so they all pass on the best tips. You’ll find it much more communal than a hotel where your interactions are fairly limited.
So What’s The Budget.
This is such a subjective term. My idea of budget may vary wildly from yours, however, I have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. The figure I have gone for is $100 AUD per person per night. This is about $75 US or £54 GBP.
My apologies to the billions of other currency users. If I am lucky enough to have you visiting my site, then I am sorry for not catering directly to you. However, if you’ve read this far, then you’re likely smart enough to be able to work it out from there.
Most of the hotels in this range either allow 2-3 kids in the room for free, or at a massively reduced price. So don’t panic yet if you thought that was out of your budget. Now lets have a look at some ways you can save more money on your stay with inclusions.
What Inclusions?
Here’s where we look to see what else we need on this trip and whether or not we can get it from the hotel or if we have to pay extra to get it. In Europe I always look for a hotel that has free private parking. Paid parking can easily cost 20 Euros a day so after a couple of weeks, that’s a lot of beer and ice cream I’ve missed out on.
Likewise, free WI-FI can stop your racking up huge charges on your mobile phone. You can simply download the maps you need the next day using the WI-FI, then work largely offline when roaming. I’m going to look at 3 key areas in this Disneyworld search. Transport, Breakfast and Laundry.
Transport
Let’s face it. You’re here for the theme parks. Disney, Universal and Sea World. They’re the big one’s around here, and no doubt they’ll dominate your time. Walt Disney learnt his lesson from Disneyland. He bought enough land for the park, then watched all the hotels, gift shops and restaurants spring up across the road. He always felt that these detracted from the look of the park.
All future parks therefore, were bought with a lot more land so that there was a buffer zone between Disney and the rest of the world. Now this is good for Disney, because you can’t just step across the road to buy a cheap lunch. You also can’t just step out of your hotel and into the park. Unless of course you stay in a Disney hotel. I don’t intend to be the first person ever to describe a Disney hotel as “budget”, so we’ll presume that you’re not there.
What this means is that you need transport. A car perhaps, to drive 15 mins to the park in the morning and 15 mins home again in the evening. That works out to be a fairly pricey car. On the upside you probably wont be doing excessive mileage.
Free Shuttles
No, the best choice here is to find a hotel which offers free transport to and from the parks. You sometimes need to look closely though. Some only go to Disney, other’s just to the parks near them. I find it easier to try and do all of your theme park stuff in a block.
The last time we went there was for 3 weeks. We spent 2 weeks using the free shuttle every day. Then just hired a car for a few days to head off and see the Kennedy Space Center, and a few other spots further afield. This probably saved us a couple of hundred dollars that we could put to much better use.
Breakfast
Most important meal of the day, depending on which brochure you read. But it can certainly add up quickly. Now, coming from Australia, I would say that the food in America is cheap and plentiful. We were thrilled with the prices. Still, if you have to buy 5 breakfasts, every morning, for three weeks. That is a lot of money.
We did make this mistake once but we learnt from it. The next time we found a hotel that included a free breakfast. We all filled our bellies in the morning, and that generally held us till around 4 pm. Then we would simply have an early dinner and beat the line.
Obviously I need to have ice cream at 11 am. It’s a medical thing. I have a note from my wife and everything. But essentially this means that we can get away with purchasing just one meal a day. If we succumb and need extra food somewhere, so be it. But we got the first one for free and it generally sets us up for the day.
Laundry
I like to travel light. That means I don’t have to spend money on excess baggage, so that’s a saving. It also means that I need to do my laundry every few days. Now most hotels have coin operated machines and I’m not suggesting that they are going to be cheaper that a laundromat. However, you don’t have to travel to get there. So that saves you fuel or possibly bus fare. The main thing that it saves you however, is time.
We can stay at the parks until they close, then head back to the hotel and do our laundry, with very little fear of being kicked out at closing time. Most of them have a night manager whose happy to let you stay. I use the time to write in my journal. I find it a good way to unwind at the end of what could have been a fairly hectic day.
The hotels
So I have gone through and found 9 hotels that fit all of these criteria. I should point out that I was using dates in late July, early August. If you were to choose off peak times then the prices should be lower. If you click on the name of the hotel it will open a new link and take you to the Booking.com page for it, and you can check availability.
For real Disney fans I have a similar post for Disneyland here, and one for Disneyland Paris, here.
Cheers and happy travels.
